Celebrate a Filipino Christmas: Words to Share with Your Kids
Filipino words to teach your kids. Pinoy Christmas decor ideas. Free Pasko printable!
The Christmas season is in full swing at our house—decorations are up, carols are playing, and we’ve hung our beloved “Maligayang Pasko” banner across the living room. As I finished straightening it, my eldest looked up and asked, “Is that Merry Christmas in Filipino?”
That simple question warmed my heart. It reminded me why these little touches matter so much. These traditions, these words, these decorations—they’re all pieces of the cultural puzzle that connect our children to their roots.
In our home, Christmas isn’t just about Santa. It’s about Santas in barongs holding lechon, the twinkle of capiz ornaments, the glow of our parol, and the centerpiece of it all—the belen, our nativity scene. But even if you don’t have access to these uniquely Filipino decorations, you can still create that connection through words.
✨ What are the words your kids need to know for a Filipino Christmas? 🎄
Start with these:
🎅 Pasko – Christmas in the Philippines isn’t just a day; it’s a whole season that begins in September and lasts until January.
🎄 Maligayang Pasko – A warm and heartfelt Filipino greeting meaning “Merry Christmas.”
⛪ Simbang Gabi – The cherished tradition of nine early morning Masses leading up to Christmas, bringing families together in faith.
✯ Parol – Star-shaped lanterns that symbolize hope, lighting up streets and homes alike.
💐 Belen – The nativity scene, often with a distinctly Filipino flair, honoring the Holy Family.
❄️ Disyembre – December, the month when the festivities reach their peak.
🎶 Karoling – Groups of carolers bringing joy through song, a tradition of music and community.
🌰 Kastanyas – Roasted chestnuts, a holiday treat that fills the air with their nostalgic aroma.
🏡 Bisita – Visiting loved ones during the holidays, celebrating family bonds.
💕 Magbigayan – The spirit of giving, sharing blessings with those around us.
Each of these words is more than just a term. They hold stories, embody traditions, and reflect the love, faith, and joy that make Filipino Christmases so special. By sharing these words with our kids, we give them a gift that lasts far beyond the season—a deeper connection to where they come from.
